Supporting Recording Artists
It’s About Connection
Those old enough to remember going to a record store and picking up an album will remember the special experience of taking the record home, playing it on a turntable and immersing yourself in the images and information provided on the cover, back cover, album sleeve, and, if you were lucky, special inserts with additional photos and information.
Through such experiences you were able to feel a connection to the creators of the album while you listened to the music. You heard the music differently when you were immersed in the content that accompanied the album.
Sadly, this means of connection between artists and listeners has all but disappeared.
A recent article published in Medium speaks of this lost experience:
The advent of streaming has changed the way a generation consumes music. When I was a teenager (I’m in my thirties), a new album release meant either a shady illegal download (those of my generation might remember a piece of software called LimeWire), which took ages and you could only listen on your slow, dial — up computer, or a trip to the local record shop to buy the CD. While lack of money meant sometimes the download was the only option, I always preferred the latter. I loved the ritual of buying a CD and flicking through the liner notes while listening to it from start to finish.
Ted Gioia with Rick Beato:
“Spotify has deliberately tried to turn the listening experience into something passive.”
But now, with Web Albums and their rich audio-visual content, once again listening to music can be an active personally engaging experience. You, the artist, can again connect with your listeners as they hear your music in the context of the informative and attractive material included in a Web Album.

What Features are Included in a Web Album?
In addition to the music Web Albums include:
- images and lyrics for each song
- profiles of musicians and other contributors
- an intuitive audio player
- a photo gallery
- a form to send direct messages to the artist(s) – if they have given permission
A Problem in the Music Industry
With the explosion of digit music recording artists saw a dramatic reduction in album sales. Former album buyers turned to digital downloads and streaming service for their music.
As a result many recording artists find themselves struggling to make up for the revenue lost from slumping album sales.
Streaming services give artists around $0.003 – $0.005 per streamed song. This means that for an album of 12 songs an artist receives around $0.036 – $0.060 per album (assuming the listener streams all 12 of the album’s songs). At this rate the sale of 100 albums works out to around $3.50 – $6.00 for the recording artist.

A Better Way of Selling Music
With the Web Album model the full amount ($1.50) from every sale of an album goes directly into your PayPal account.
The Cost of Creating Web Albums vs Vinyl Albums or CDs
The cost to the artist for having a Web Album created is $50.
If you currently have a website with a registered domain name your Web Albums can usually be added without any extra hosting or domain name registration costs. Otherwise, you will need to purchase a domain name (~$20/year) and website hosting (~$120/year).
The cost of producing vinyl records or CDs is many times more than the cost of a Web Album.
Also, with a Web Album there isn’t the cost or hassle of packaging and shipping physical objects.
